You have a choice of beaches around Pattaya with quite different characteristics. The choice is yours. Decide if you want a quiet beach with few facilities, a secluded beach with restricted access, a nice beach with lots of facilities or one that is a short step away from the night life.
If you like a beach with lots of activities, that’s close to good restaurants, then choose Pattaya or Jomtien. If you are looking for a quieter, more secluded beach, then choose Naklua or the Pattaya cliff area. The secluded beaches are more difficult to get to. Generally, there is no regular taxi service that will take you there. Rent a motorcycle, take a motorcycle taxi, or call one of the local taxi services to get you there. It’s work the extra planning.
Main Pattaya Beach
The main Pattaya beach is a 3km long sweeping curve, that creates a protected bay. There is a shady promenade that is busy day and night with tourists and local people selling food, boat trips and other services. The northern section of the beach – north of Pattaya Central Rd (Pattaya Klang) – has the larger hotels and fewer bars and stores. So the beach itself is quieter. It’s good for swimming and relaxation. The southern section is more hectic. This is where you will find the beer bars and shopping malls. Walking Street is at the south end of this stretch of beach.
Pattaya Cliff Beaches
There are several secluded beaches around the point below the Pattaya cliff area, between Pattaya and Jomtien. Take the main road between Pattaya and Jomtien. If you take a songthaew get off at Khao Pratamnak. This is the road to the Royal Cliff Beach resort. Take a left turn off this road at Pratamnak 6. You will find a motorcycle taxi service at this intersection. Travel west until you see the hotels.
There are approach roads to the beach between the hotel buildings. The beaches have some facilities, but expect them to be quiet most days. There are grocery stores and restaurants in the area where can get something to eat. These beaches are beautiful, white sand beaches great for relaxing. Rent an umbrella or swim and soak up the sun. Enjoy your day!
Jomtien beach just to the south is a longer (6km), wider beach and has more facilities than Pattaya beach. There is plenty of available parking, which attracts more families. Expect to find families enjoying their time together at the beach, especially on Sundays. Jomtien beach has lots of activities, including windsurfing, jet skiing, and para-sailing. There also lots of great restaurants just across the road from the beach.
Naklua, to the north of Pattaya, has the most interesting beaches. The beaches are difficult to access, but well worth the effort. The coastline is long and winding. There a lots of small coves, with rock formations, that offer great potential for scrambling and walking your way along the sea shore. A great place to take kids. On the point at the northern end is the Sanctuary of Truth. A very dramatic sight if you haven’t seen it before!
